Measure net floor area
Length × width of the open floor. The toilet footprint is usually tiled under the pan — do not subtract it unless you are leaving a cut-out.
Alcoves and step-down showers: split into rectangles and add areas.
Waste by layout
Straight lay in a box room: 10% waste is common. Diagonal or herringbone: 12–15%. Large format tiles on a small floor: fewer grout lines but higher breakage risk — keep an extra box.
Boxes, not loose tiles
Suppliers sell by the box. Divide your tile count by tiles per box and round up. Keep one unopened box after the job for future repairs — dye lots change.
