Start with the paved footprint
Measure the area that will actually receive pavers. For a rectangle, multiply length by width. A 16 ft by 12 ft patio is 192 sq ft. In metric, a 4.8 m by 3.6 m patio is 17.28 m². Include small extensions under edge restraints only if sand genuinely continues beneath them; do not include a garden bed simply because it sits inside the tape-measure rectangle.
Break an L-shaped patio into two rectangles, calculate each one, then add them. For a curved path, divide it into short rectangles using an average width. A path 30 ft long that varies from 3.5 to 4.5 ft can be estimated at 4 ft wide, giving 120 sq ft. Sketching the pieces on paper prevents a missed alcove from becoming a second merchant run.
Paver waste and bedding-sand waste are different allowances. Cuts around steps may justify extra pavers, but they do not automatically require the same percentage of extra sand. Sand allowance covers a slightly uneven base, spillage, and screeding losses. Keep the two order lines separate.
Use the specified bedding depth—not a convenient one
A nominal 1-inch or 25 mm bedding course is common for interlocking pavers after final compaction. Some systems specify a loose screeded thickness around 1 to 1.5 inches so it settles toward the design thickness when the pavers are compacted. Check the product instructions because permeable systems, porcelain paving, and slabs on mortar can use entirely different build-ups.
Do not use bedding sand to correct a base that is 2 inches low. Thick pockets settle differently and can leave dips that hold water. Bring the compacted gravel base to the proper elevation and fall first, then use the sand as a uniform setting layer. Skip bedding sand altogether if the selected paving system calls for mortar, pedestals, or an open-graded chip setting bed.
Depth has a direct, unforgiving effect on quantity. Moving from 1 inch to 1.5 inches adds 50 percent to the sand volume. That may be correct under a particular specification, but it should be a conscious decision rather than a rough screed rail disappearing into a hollow.
Run the volume calculation in one unit system
In US units, convert depth to feet before multiplying. For the 192 sq ft patio at 1 inch, depth is 1/12 ft, so volume is 192 × 1/12 = 16 cu ft. Divide by 27 for cubic yards: 16/27 = 0.59 cu yd. At 1.25 inches, the same patio needs 20 cu ft, or about 0.74 cu yd, before allowance.
In metric, convert millimetres to metres. The 17.28 m² patio at 25 mm uses 17.28 × 0.025 = 0.432 m³. At 30 mm it uses about 0.518 m³. Enter area and depth in the sand calculator and check the displayed units before copying the result to an order sheet.
If a supplier sells by weight, ask for the bulk density or coverage figure for the exact damp or dry product being delivered. Sand weight changes with moisture and grading. Calculate volume first, then let the supplier convert that volume using its own stock data; a generic internet density is only a planning estimate.
Choose bedding sand, not whatever is cheapest
Washed, well-graded concrete sand is commonly used because its angular grains screed cleanly and resist shifting better than very fine material. Names vary by region—concrete sand, sharp sand, grit sand, or ASTM C33-type sand may describe suitable products—but names alone are unreliable. Tell the yard you need bedding sand for interlocking pavers and confirm it meets the paver supplier’s specification.
Masonry sand and play sand are usually too fine for a conventional paver bed. They can retain water, move under load, and make an unstable setting course. Stone dust is accepted in some local systems and rejected in others because drainage and freeze-thaw behavior depend on its fines. Match the whole base design rather than swapping one layer in isolation.
Polymeric jointing sand is not bedding sand. It goes into dry joints after the pavers are laid and compacted, and its coverage depends on joint width, paver thickness, and pattern. Buy it from the joint-sand coverage chart instead of adding a token bag to the bedding calculation.
Allow for handling without hiding a bad base
On a neat rectangular patio with a accurately graded base, 5 to 10 percent above calculated bedding volume is a sensible ordering check. The 0.59 cu yd example becomes roughly 0.62 to 0.65 cu yd. A bulk supplier may have a half-yard or one-yard minimum, so the actual purchase can be set by delivery increments rather than the decimal result.
Use the upper end when the route from pile to patio is long, the shape has many edges, or the base has small acceptable variations. Do not keep increasing the allowance to cover visible hollows. A quarter-yard dumped into isolated low spots turns the bedding course into a variable-thickness fill layer and invites settlement.
Bagged sand works for a small landing or repair where bulk-delivery minimums dominate. Read the bag volume, not just its weight, then divide the required cubic feet by the stated bag yield and round up. Twenty 0.5-cu-ft bags sound manageable until they need carrying through a finished house, so include access in the choice.
Screed only what you can cover
Set rails to the specified loose depth and pull a straight screed board without repeatedly working the sand. Once screeded, keep feet and wheelbarrows off it. Lay pavers from the installed surface or from boards arranged so they do not create depressions. A pristine quantity calculation cannot rescue footprints left beneath the finished work.
Prepare an area you can pave that day. Rain can wash channels into exposed bedding sand, and a dry windy afternoon can disturb the surface. If weather interrupts the job, recheck line and level rather than sprinkling loose sand into every mark and hoping compaction evens it out.
Compact the finished pavers using the plate and protective mat recommended for the units, then fill joints in the specified sequence. The bedding layer should settle evenly. If one corner drops sharply, lift the pavers and repair the base; adding more joint sand will not correct support underneath.
Keep the gravel and sand takeoffs separate
A paver build-up may have 4 to 8 inches (100 to 200 mm) of compacted aggregate below roughly 1 inch of bedding sand. Those layers can share the same footprint but not the same depth, density, or compaction allowance. Run the gravel quantity as a separate calculation, ideally by lift if the base is built in stages.
Worked check: the 192 sq ft patio with a 6-inch gravel base uses 96 cu ft, or about 3.56 cu yd, before its allowance. The 1-inch sand bed uses only 0.59 cu yd. If an order sheet shows nearly equal gravel and sand quantities, a depth conversion has probably gone wrong.
Set elevations from the finished surface downward: paver thickness, compacted bedding thickness, compacted base, then subgrade. This catches an excavation that is too shallow before material arrives. It also keeps drainage fall consistent instead of trying to manufacture slope in the sand.
