How this is calculated
Volume and waste follow the same method as the Concrete Calculator. Materials multiply order quantity by your ready-mix price — the number on the quote sheet from the plant.
Labour per unit volume is a simplified way to compare contractor bids. Finishing, forming, and reinforcement are not broken out; adjust the labour rate to reflect what your market includes.
Formula & methodology
Order = Volume × (1 + waste %). Materials = Order × $/yd³. Total = Materials + (Order × labour rate) + fees.
Worked example
A 12 ft × 12 ft patio, 4 in, $155/yd³, $45/yd³ labour
- 1.Volume ≈ 1.78 yd³; with 10% waste → 1.96 yd³
- 2.Materials ≈ $304
- 3.Labour ≈ $88
- 4.No pump fee → planning total near $390 before finish upgrades
Frequently asked questions
What is a short-load fee?
Ready-mix plants often surcharge orders under 3–4 cubic yards because the truck still has to run. Put that charge in the pump/fee field.
Does this include forming and rebar?
No. It is volume, mix, and pour labour only. Curved forms, mesh, and pump hire are extras.
Stamped or coloured concrete?
Finish upgrades are priced per square foot on top of plain concrete. Increase the labour rate or add a line in the Project Cost Estimator.
How do I get the ready-mix price?
Call two local plants with your zip or postcode and ask for price per cubic yard delivered. Prices move with fuel and demand.
